Very Expensive Urine

Sheldon (as Penny selects vitamin supplements): Oh boy.

Penny: What now?

Sheldon: Well, there’s some value to taking a multivitamin, but the human body can only absorb so much, what you’re buying here are the ingredients for very expensive urine.

Penny: Well, maybe that’s what I was going for.

Sheldon: Well then you’ll want some manganese.

(from The Big Bang Theory: Series 1 Episode 04 – The Luminous Fish Effect)

In an effort to try to take care of myself, I’ve started a new vitamin regimen.  I’ve taken a multivitamin most of my life (mother’s orders) but I never felt like it was doing much.  I’ve been diagnosed with iron and B12 deficiencies a few years  ago, so I migrated to iron supplements and then just B-Complex.  The problem was I was very inconsistent.  I didn’t like taking them in the morning, because then I would need to eat to get the pain in my stomach to stop.  I tried to take them at dinner, but more often I would just forget.

This was until I did some research into natural treatments for depression.  I found a couple things I was willing to try, and could easily get at a drugstore. so I bought everything I needed, including a weekly pill case.  Half my problem was I hated going through 4 bottles every morning for one pill in each bottle (i am that lazy).

Here’s my daily intake:

  • Zyrtec (2x day, for allergies)
  • Multivitamin (once daily)
  • Vitamin B complex (once daily, helps with nosebleeds.  I haven’t had one since I started)
  • St. John’s Wort (“mood stabilizer”, twice daily)
  • Chromium Picolinate (also for depression, and according to wikipedia, stifles carb craving associated with depression)

I came across St John’s Wort and Chromium Picolilate while looking at natural antidepressants.  I’ve been feeling pretty good since I started the regimen a few weeks ago.  I definitely feel more emotionally stable.  I’m well aware this is more likely to the placebo effect, but I really don’t care.  I’ll take any help I can get.

So I pop all the pills after dinner and overall this seems to help, and I will continue until it becomes more of an annoyance than it’s worth.  But I could well be buying very expensive urine…
